Franchise Or Not To Franchise: That Is The Question

You’ve researched all the business classified opportunities and weighed all the options. There are tons of franchise opportunities out there, but something about that option just doesn’t sit well with you. There is a business for sale just down the block from your current job, but can you handle the responsibility of being your own boss? I know it can be confusing. You can research all the angles until you are blue in the face and your mouse finger is blistered from overuse and still not know what’s right for you.

Before you buy a business, you need to know that small business opportunities are like children. You shouldn’t even consider having them until you are certain that you’re ready for the responsibilities involved. Every small business for sale in USA has its share of obstacles to overcome, but nothing compares to the satisfaction that comes from owning your own business and adding a quality product or service to your own community. There is a lot of pride to be taken in becoming your own boss and providing employment for others, not to mention that you’ll be standing on your own merits as well as the merits of your products or service.

But why own your own business instead of buying into a franchise? Well, for starters, though franchises offer education, support and insight in return for a slice of the profits, you are paying up front to your franchise business provider while still bearing the majority of responsibility. As your own boss, you still bear the brunt of responsibility but you also reap the rewards for your hard work and dedication. You stand and fall on your own, which brings a sense of urgency to the job.

High-income business opportunities don’t just happen. You must plan and research. You must be dedicated and driven. You must pick a business that plays to your strengths and talents. You must also know the market you intend to operate in, picking the right product or service to fit the customer base in that area. Even if you were to buy into one of the top franchises, your hands would be tied when it came to products or services. As your own boss you can change or do away with any product or service that doesn’t seem to be striking the appropriate cord with the community.

Now, you have to recognize that there is a distinct difference between starting your own business and buying a business for sale by its previous owner. Buying from the owner may be quite similar to buying into a franchise. The previous owner may be willing to train you or help you prepare for taking over the business, but you still won’t have anyone to answer to but yourself. On the other hand, starting your own business means that you get to start off on your own, applying you skills to get your products or services out there to the public. Some of the most successful businesses out there started small, but grew exponentially due to the hard work and diligence of their owners. That iPod in your hand is the product of the once-small business called Apple. I’m sure you’ve heard of it.

Business franchises can only grow as much as the franchisers allow. Starting your own company is a business opportunity unlike any other in that it can grow as large as the market allows, assuming that you manage it well. The small business owner has the unique ability to do what the big boys still try to do – test a product or service out in a small market. As your business progresses, you can expand as far as your resources will allow.

In the end, I think the deciding factor should be whether or not you want to operate under the auspices of a franchiser. If you trust your own instincts and have the resources to pursue it, owning your own business is the way to go. Whether you buy from an owner or start out from scratch, owning your own business can be as rewarding, if not more so, as taking part of one of the thousands of franchise business offers out there. Only you can decide what is right for you.
