Let's face it, there are no new ideas. You've spent time cruising the Internet for small business opportunities or maybe researching the top franchises to see if something strikes you, but everything seems old hat. Those of us looking to buy a business are left scratching our heads, wondering if there really is such a thing as the perfect business opportunity. Guess what? There isn't. There is, however, the perfect opportunity for you.
The best small business opportunities are the result of good planning. As you research franchise business offers, keep in mind that the more work you put into your business plan, the greater your chance of success - and thus, the less work will be needed to keep your business in the black. Every franchise business provider wants you to choose their franchise, and some will put considerable effort and training into improving your chances for success. The best franchise business opportunities come from those franchises willing to partner with you in a tangible way. Beware any franchise that will leave you bearing the entire weight of responsibility for your franchise's success or failure.
You see, franchise business offers are like children. Everyone that has one thinks theirs is the best. You, however, have the responsibility of weeding through the franchises for sale to find the one that would make the most sense (have the least potential for failure and the greatest potential of success) for the marketplace in which you intend to operate. Every business franchise carries with it the potential of success or failure, so the marketplace must reveal to us whether or not there is room in the crowded market for ours. The market will also determine the level of need or desire among consumers for the product or service we will deliver with our particular business opportunity.
Let's look at a simple example, using a generic fast food franchise (fictional, of course). Suppose you wanted to open a fast food taco restaurant - we'll call it "Tick Tock Taco" - but the area already has three "big name" taco franchises in the neighborhood. Unless Tick Tock Taco has tacos unlike any the world has ever seen, they likely won't do well against the competition, who likely has a firm grip on the local market. On the other hand, if the community has plenty of burger joints and chicken shacks, but nothing in the way of tacos, you'll likely be providing the area with a solid alternative to burgers, which makes your taco restaurant a viable business franchise.
You may think that was an overly simple example, but the lesson applies across a broader spectrum. Whatever you plan to sell, whether product or service, you must look at the market. Some markets thrive on healthy competition, but a glut will doom your business to mediocrity, or worse yet, failure. So a careful examination of your intended market is crucial before deciding which franchise opportunity is best for you.
That being said, occasionally a product will be so innovative - will stand out (in quality or price point) so far from the rest - that even an over saturated market will sit up and take notice. Take the Apple's iPhone for a recent example. Apple was sitting pretty before getting into the cell phone market, but even in the crowded cell phone market, they felt they had something new to offer. Apple entered the market with the iPhone and quite quickly became the coolest phone out there. Now, other manufacturers are rushing to get their own touch screen phones on the market.
Buy a franchise and make it successful. You can do it, provided you do your homework and pick a franchise and marketplace wherein you have some reasonable assurance of success. In the end, however, hard work and perseverance must follow all that careful planning. The top franchises never stop looking for new ways to pursue excellence – never stop working toward their goals. If there truly aren’t any new ideas, the smart business person will either find a way to bring products and services to areas without them or distinguish their franchise by putting a new spin on something familiar.
